Soapnuts

soapnuts

Soapnuts are the fruit of the soapnut tree which grows in Southern India and Nepal. The nuts are gathered in the autumn, shelled and left to dry. The shells contain saponin, a natural soap, and have been used for centuries as a washing detergent as well as for dish washing and hair and body care. The soapnuts are effective, gentle and economical, 3-4 shells can be used for 3 machine washes (at 40 degrees, 2 at 60 degrees) and then composted. They also soften fabrics, won’t fade colours, and can be used for hand washing.
